Does anyone suffer from migrains? If so what med or meds do you use?
I have for years and nothing seems to help them....i had one all weekend - what a weekend from hell....

thanks
Vicki B.
Years ago I suffered from migraines but I have not had one in a couple of years. I started taking Paxil in 2002 and it seems to have all but banished them. (That, and getting rid of my ex old man! Ha!) Before that I was taking Esgic Plus which is basically just about 1200 of Motrin. Sometimes it just didn't work tho. Or I would go to the ER and get a shot of Torodol and it would knock it out in about 20 minutes. But I still believe that the Paxil is what actually got rid of the migraines because it is a seratonan reuptake inhibitor. It replaces the seratonan in your brain that should be there for normal functioning. Talk to your doctor about it, maybe it will help you too. I actually started taking the Paxil for anxiety and depression, not knowing it was going to cure my migraines!

Oh yeah!! I have been suffering for years. I can not take the migraine meds. They make me so sick. I can only take pain pills and those just knock me out and make me wacky. The only thing that has helped me is DISTILLED WATER. I know that sounds so completely strange but it works. A doctor told me about it about 4 years ago and my migraines have pretty much gone away. I drink it all the time. When I've been eating out alot and drinking their tap water I get migraines. Try it, you may be surprised. Let me know if you do it.

I have sufferred from migraines since I was a teenager, over 20 years now. Mine is a family genetic thing from my dads side of the family. I am curretnly taking Maxalt, for the actual migraine, but was put on a blood pressure medicine as a blocker for them as well. I have mine fairly under control finally, and dont get them as often as I used to ( used to get them 1-2 times per month, at least). If I can catch it at the beginning, I have foung that the over the counter medicine for tension relief will sometimes help. I also joined a massage place here (that is expanding across the US) called Massage envy, and that has helped a lot too. When I get one that is real bad, I will take the medicine, take a very very hot shower, then crawl into bed in a very dark room, and try to sleep. Sometimes a little chocolate ( extra caffeine) will ease it to, but only a little piece, because a lot will make it worse, amd make me sick. The one thing I have noticed, is that when I do get one now, they will last sometimes for days. I think 3 full days is the longest I have had a real bad one. Hope some of this info helps. I have also taken several other medicines for it (prescription ones) that you tend to almost get immuned to. This one, Maxalt, has lasted the longest for me, I have been on it for a few years now. It is a little tiny pill, about 1/4 inch long, but works good for me.

I can't take any of the migrane meds either--they all make me loopy. Luckily, for me, I married a chiropractor 14 years ago and I don't have nearly as many migranes since I get regular tune ups from him. I hadn't heard about the distilled water--I'm gonna try that. Sometimes, if I know one is coming, excederin will make it not so bad if I take it early enough.

I know the distilled water sounds crazy. We were living in MD near an airforce base when mine got so incredibly bad. I couldn't leave the house or take care of the kids. Then this dr across the street told me that the planes were dumping their fuel before landing and the water was making me sick. I just laughed at him and told him he was crazy. But after months in bed with migraines that lasted days and the hangovers that lasted for days, I gave in. Within about a week of drinking 1 gallon a day I didn't get anymore. I went over and kissed that man. I have them under control now. Just get one about every 6 months or so. And when I do, I got to my chiropractor!! biggrin.gif

Thanks everyone!
This weekend was the first time that i have gotten a migraine for 3 years now and usually if i catch it i pop 4 advil and then it goes away, but it did not work this time.....i have tried maxalt and all the other meds, vicodin for the pain which makes me loopy nothing worked. i will have to try the distilled water.....

I have had them for 21 years. The pain is excruciating to say the least! I'm on a lot of migraine medicines. Some to prevent them and some to take when they come on. I have tried every single medicine out there for them. I've also had nerve blocks, a hysterectomy, sinus surgery, several chiropractors and many other things to try and help them but nothing has done any good! They have taken over my life! I can't get through a couple of days without one. Then they can last up to a week and 10 days at a time. Sorry to hear that you all have them too. sad.gif

I also have them. I have suffered from them since I a kid and was finally dignosed and treated when I was a teen. That is when they put me on the narcitics. I now refuse to take them, because of the side affects I get frome them. I now take Zomeg when I feel one coming one. It seems to take care of it. Within an hour of rest it is gone and I feel more like me again.
I am sorry to hear that som amy of you suffer from them.
I hope and pray you find the help you need and feel better soon.

Maybe he'll make a house call--I've never been to PA--make sure you need a house call next time Gary is in town!! LOL Actually, my hubby got to meet and work on Chris Cagle once when he was in town for a show. I keep hoping that Gary or one of the guys needs an "adjustment" and my DH gets that call!! Of course, my DH keeps saying he hopes Shania Twain calls instead! laugh.gif

I don't get them very often but when I do I just stay in bed. I've got some Tylenol 3's but they knock me out and I get an upset stomach from them. I used to get extemely bad headaches (not really migraines) almost daily and finally my GP sent me to a physiotherapist. Apparently I have a joint out of place in my neck which may be causing the headaches. He would crack my neck (which hurt like hell) and almost instantly the headache would go away. Just can't afford to keep going.

Guess I'll have to start talking my dh into making an out of the country housecall, too!! Maybe we'll start a new service--a traveling chiropractor! I can work the work schedule around Gary's schedule--make all the shows and meet all the Junkies across the world! Sounds like the life for me!!

i'm 19 yrs old and have suffered migraines for about 6 years now .. sad.gif i've had several MRIs and catscans .. and had several tests .. they don't find anything so they don't give me anything. so basically, i just suffer about 4 migraines a month with no medication -- just a dark room, cold shower (hot makes me nauseus with a migraine) and sleep. sometimes they are so bad i can't even sleep .. but -- sorry i'm of no help sad.gif just wanted to join the migraine clan!

My heart goes out to all you regular sufferers sad.gif I used to get them regularly, but now I don't get them very often. Maybe every other month, and usually right before or after my period. I take Imitrex, which seems to work well for me. The distilled water solution is very interesting. My best friend's husband suffers from frequent migraines; I'll have to tell him about that, see if maybe it will help him.
Babygirl
I used Zomig for a while but it started burning my veins. Imitrex, Maxalt, Frova, Relpax and all of the trip-tans burn my veins except for Amerge. It's the only different one in the bunch. It is on a level by itself. At times it helps and other times it don't faze it. I've probably had over 20 MRI'S and Scans in my life. They do not know what causes migraines and they do not know how to treat them. I am taking a seizure medicine now trying to prevent them which is not helping! I have been to a migraine clinic and had no luck there either. My Dad had migraines for years and as he got older his just stopped. I am hoping that mine do the same. I hope all of you can find an answer and get some relief. Keeping you in my prayers.

look into manuka honey usa their manuka honey with bee vemon helps migrians headaches. don't take it if you allergies to bee stings. i just order 11 jars yesterday and other things.no side effect like medince does.
Just Cheryl
I do and it's no fun at all. I've had migraines since I was about 11 or so I guess. I've taken Imatrex in the past and worked for awhile, I also try some relaxation exercises that I learned in Aerobics several years ago and that helps some too. Mine typically last 3-5 days and the last few years I'm really not taking any medication right now for them. Other than them being really annoying, they aren't keeping me from doing anything so I'm trying to hold off on the meds until I really have to. Good luck, hope everybody finds something that works for them.

I actually saw something about honey last week. Tell me what you know about this treatment if you will. Thanks! wink.gif

Babygirl, imitrex is something the tried on me -- it also burned my veins and gave me an allergic reaction!

They put me on Relpax for a while -- which was working -- and i loved it .. when i ran out they wouldn't prescribe me anymore ..

I'm going to walmart today to pick up some distilled water and i'm going to try the honey ..

I suffered from migraines for since my early teens' ( I am now 34). Several years ago I started seeing a wonderful neurologist that started me on Topamax and Maxalt. All other triptan's make me nauseated. I now only have maybe one or two HA's a week compared to 5-6. And sometimes Excedrin can handle those. But I have also learned my triggers which is very important for migraine sufferers. Keep a HA diary and see a qualified MD to get on the right combination of meds. Good Luck!!!

Topamax is what I am on too. I have been on it several times going up to 200 mg a day. That's great that it has helped you. I can't tell much difference though. If I have 1 or 2 good days a week I'm doing really well. I use to just have them 3 or 4 days a month until the last 12 years. Now they are almost daily and I hardly go out because the sun also triggers one for me. I keep a HA diary and I know what food triggers them and I stay away from those. They are still coming though! It gets so hard dealing with these monsters! blink.gif People don't realize how bad they are unless they have them or live with someone that has them.

Ain't that the truth. I have had so many people tell me to just take some Tylenol and get on with it. No one can know unless they've suffered through one - or a 100.

My doctor once told me when I feel like one might be coming on to drink a Coca~Cola! Something in it would curb the headache. But I don't remember what. That was a long time ago.
LAluvsGary
I've had them for longer than I care to remember.

What helps me the most is moist heat - bought a moist heating pad and simply put it over my head/face when I get one - the heat makes me sleep.
When I wake up the migraine is gone!
Babygirl
It's strange that different things help different people but it's also great. I always have an ice pack on my head. My freezer is full of them and I use one after another. They only last an hour or two and they're hot. I have tried the Coca-cola and heating pad and neither helped me. I did look up the honey and it said not to use it if you're taking a beta-blocker and I am so I guess that's out for now too. Guess I have to wait until I'm older to see if they go away like my Dad's did. Not looking forward to getting older but so looking forward to them going away! blink.gif

I started getting migraines about 10 years ago. Usually, they're not too bad and I ALWAYS get the aura first, so I know I'm getting one. I've been lucky because I found that naproxen (ALEVE) works very well for me if I catch it just as it's coming on. I've had a few where my speech was slurred, had the aura, and felt nausea coming on and had to go home from work. But that doesn't happen to often. I guess I'm pretty lucky.

sorry babygirl you can't take the honey with beta blockers.

My Daughter has severe migraines.....2 to 3 times a week.....some last 2 to 3 days. Her doctor has had her on every med out there.....no relief.....she ends up taking so many meds.....ends up ill from the meds. Hers started when she was 17.....she's now 34.....migraines have increased, instead of slowing down. She says they hurts so bad, that she thinks they are going to drive her crazy. She's had all the tests.....MRI.....Ct scan.....neck sonagrams.....blood work, etc.

IF ANYONE FINDS ANYTHING THAT HELPS PLEASE KEEP US POSTED.
